Abstract:
Until the establishment of Saudi Arabia in 1932, the real concept of the novel in Saudi Arabia was quite unknown even to the educated ones. After establishment, Saudi Students went abroad on scholarships, particularly to Egypt, from where they returned with the concept of this literary genre and started writing. However, this process of experimenting with the novelistic form only became visible on the Arab literary scene during 70s and 80s, when late Abdel RahmanMunif, Ghazi al-Qusaibi, and living legend Turki al-Hamad have come to the scene. Throughout his novels, Turki al-Hamad tried to openly discuss and putting comments on the sensitive issues in Saudi society like religion and sex torevealing the truth about an obscure and hidden world to an international audience, despite being ostracized by the state.
